Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Friday that her country had not previously arrested boxer Julio César Chávez Jr., who was recently taken into custody by US authorities for overstaying his visa and submitting fraudulent documents.
Chávez, 39, was detained by federal agents while riding a scooter in front of his home in Los Angeles. He faces charges related to arms and drug trafficking, with US officials claiming he has ties to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel.
The arrest came just days after Chávez lost a boxing match against influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Chávez had entered the US on a tourist visa in August 2023, but his stay was cut short due to the expired visa.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers also accused Chávez of submitting multiple fraudulent statements when applying for permanent residency on April 2, 2024. His marriage to a US citizen is under investigation, with ties to a granddaughter of imprisoned Sinaloa Cartel kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
Chávez’s deportation and sentencing in Mexico are hoped for by Sheinbaum, who expressed her country’s desire to address the charges against him.
