Indonesia is seeking a trade deal with the US to avoid tariffs on its critical mineral exports, proposing “brownfield” investments in its copper and nickel resources. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto described the offer as his country’s second-best chance to mitigate the 32% tariff imposed by President Donald Trump. The proposal includes investing in Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, while providing access to the country’s critical minerals vital to electronics, defence, and aerospace sectors.
