Pope Francis’s decision not to spend his summer holidays in Castel Gandolfo has left a lasting impact on the sleepy hilltop town, but his successor, Pope Leo, is set to revive the tradition. The new pontiff will arrive on Sunday for a two-week stay and return in mid-August.
Residents are thrilled at the prospect of having a pope among them again, with one shopkeeper comparing it to a “divorce” that has been restored. Anna, a local resident, said: “Not only because his presence generates some activity but because this is a papal town – it is the air we breathe.”
Castel Gandolfo’s connection with the Vatican dates back to 1596, when it was bought by the Catholic Church as a summer retreat for popes. The tradition continued until Francis, who preferred to spend his summers in his humble Vatican abode.
However, under Pope Leo’s leadership, Castel Gandolfo is once again poised to become the go-to papal holiday destination. Visitors can explore the town’s Renaissance-era gardens and vast rooms containing garments worn by popes dating back to the 16th century.
Local business owners are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Pope Leo, who is expected to host audiences and rosaries for residents and carry out Vatican duties. The palace will remain a museum during his stay, while he will reside in another newly renovated property within its grounds.
As preparations continue, local priest Tadeusz Rozmus said: “Just because they’re on holiday, they don’t necessarily stop working.” Castel Gandolfo’s mayor, Alberto De Angelis, has welcomed the return of Pope Leo, citing it as an opportunity to boost the town’s economy.
