UN Chief Slams Russian Drone Attack on Ukraine

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned a Russian drone and missile attack against Ukraine this week, describing it as a “dangerous escalation” that has disrupted the power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The attack, which was the largest of its kind in the three-year war, killed one person and injured at least 23 others.

Russia fired over 500 drones and 11 missiles at the capital Kyiv overnight into Friday, with the sounds of air raid sirens and detonations echoing until dawn. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as “deliberately massive and cynical.”

As the situation remains volatile, Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskii, warned of a possible new Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region. The US has been struggling to reach a ceasefire to end the war, and Russia has stepped up its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The attack comes as Ukraine ramps up its retaliatory strikes in Russia, shooting down 94 of its drones overnight into Saturday. Meanwhile, four Ukrainian drones were shot down while approaching Moscow, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. The situation remains tense, with both sides engaging in a cycle of retaliation and escalation.
