Scientists Discover Bacteria That Can Absorb “Forever Chemicals”

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals,” have a reputation for being persistent pollutants in the environment. While some bacteria are known to break down these compounds, it’s unclear if human gut bacteria possess this ability.

A recent study published in Nature Microbiology has shed light on how certain species of human gut bacteria can absorb and store PFAS. The research suggests that boosting these beneficial bacteria in our bodies could help mitigate the negative impact of PFAS on health.

The study found 38 different gut bacterial strains capable of absorbing PFAS at various concentrations, with one strain, Bacteroides uniformis, proving particularly effective. Researchers also discovered mechanisms that can make bacteria more or less effective at taking up PFAS, which could be useful for future bioengineering efforts.

When tested on mice, the microbes were able to quickly absorb PFAS, excreting them through their feces as levels of forever chemicals increased. The researchers believe this could lead to the development of probiotic supplements that boost beneficial gut bacteria and help clear out PFAS from our systems.

While more research is needed to confirm the bacteria’s ability to remove PFAS from human bodies, the findings offer hope for addressing the health concerns associated with these pollutants.
