Microsoft executive Matt Turnbull faced criticism after sharing on LinkedIn how he believes large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Copilot can help reduce the emotional and cognitive load associated with job loss. Following a recent layoff of 9,000 employees, Turnbull suggested that LLMs can aid overwhelmed developers in planning their careers, improving resumes, and finding “emotional clarity and confidence.”
Turnbull provided specific AI prompts for navigating job loss, including career planning, resume help, networking, and emotional clarity assistance. He acknowledged that no AI tool replaces human experience but emphasized the tools’ potential to provide temporary relief during a challenging time.
However, Turnbull’s post was met with negativity from LinkedIn users, who questioned his suggestion that LLMs could alleviate job loss emotions. The post was deleted hours later, sparking concerns about Microsoft’s commitment to its employees amidst an ongoing AI-driven restructuring process.
