Jurassic World Rebirth Fails to Shake Off Franchise Fatigue

The latest installment in the Jurassic World series fails to live up to its promise of change, instead relying on familiar beats that have been seen before. Despite having a talented director in Gareth Edwards and a well-crafted action sequence, the movie’s lack of ambition is its main issue. With a truncated storyline and poor character development, Rebirth tries to awkwardly merge two separate plot threads, resulting in a disjointed viewing experience.

The film’s refusal to take risks has been a hallmark of the franchise for years, with each sequel relying too heavily on nostalgia and formulaic storytelling. Fallen Kingdom was a rare exception, but its attempt to challenge itself was met with mixed reception. Rebirth is more of the same, showcasing thrilling dino action and charismatic cast members but lacking depth and nuance.

The movie’s creative choices, such as the reveal that the escaped dinosaurs have mostly died off outside of a handful of islands, feel like a cop-out rather than an effort to innovate. For a franchise that feels bulletproof at times, it’s disheartening to see Jurassic World continue to play it safe instead of taking real risks.

If this series wants to turn its reputation around, it needs to learn the importance of evolution – not just in terms of special effects or action sequences, but also in storytelling and character development. Until then, Rebirth will likely be seen as just another installment in a franchise that’s stuck in the past.
