A rebel group has overthrown long-time Syrian dictator Bashar Assad in a significant turning point for the country’s nearly 14-year civil war. The takeover, which forced Assad to flee, is expected to have far-reaching effects in the Middle East.
According to Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., the fall of the Assad regime could be equivalent to the collapse of the Berlin Wall, leading to a ripple effect that has resulted in dozens of countries gaining freedom after years of occupation and totalitarian control. The US President, Joe Biden, has offered support to neighboring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Israel, should any threat arise from Syria during this transition period.
Biden’s statement comes as the international community grapples with how Syria will be governed following the rebel takeover. Wilson believes that the Syrian people will “push” for a free and democratic Syria. The US has already begun to engage with world leaders and neighboring nations, with senior administration officials meeting with senior leaders to discuss the future of Syria.
The fall of Assad’s regime is also attributed to Israel’s success in weakening Iran and its proxies, as well as Ukraine’s efforts to “weaken” Russia. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the development, saying it was a result of Israel’s attacks on Iran and Hezbollah.
