New Horizons Pioneers Interstellar Navigation with Stellar Cartography

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has successfully demonstrated the use of stellar cartography to navigate its journey through interstellar space. This innovative technique uses the positions of nearby stars to determine the spacecraft’s location and trajectory.

In April 2020, the New Horizons spacecraft was 47.1 astronomical units (au) away from Earth when it was imaged by both NASA’s Deep Space Network and the spacecraft itself.
