AI Technology Boosts NHS Scan Efficiency in Hull Hospitals

A new AI-powered software is revolutionizing MRI scanning at NHS hospitals in Hull, allowing staff to see more patients while reducing scan times and improving image quality. The Air Recon Deep Learning (ARDL) software has been installed at three hospitals, including Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, and is set to be introduced at two other locations.

The software uses algorithms to reduce background noise, cutting average scan times by 10-15 minutes. This means routine scans are now taking up to 30 minutes less than before, with a prostate scan reducing from 45 minutes to 30 minutes. The trust also reports an increase in the number of patients that can be scanned over a 12-hour period.

The new technology has been particularly beneficial for vulnerable groups, such as those with claustrophobia or learning disabilities, who are now able to endure shorter scan times. Additionally, staff have reported fewer children requiring general anaesthesia to complete scans.

The AI-powered software is set to further improve healthcare services in Hull and East Yorkshire, enabling the trust to treat more patients while reducing wait times and improving overall efficiency.
