Trump Signals End of US Involvement in Syria’s Civil War

US President-elect Donald Trump has stated that the United States should have “nothing to do” with Syria’s ongoing civil war, signaling a possible end to US support for Kurdish-led forces in the region. In a Saturday morning social media post, Trump emphasized that “Syria is not our friend,” and urged the US to refrain from involvement.

Trump campaigned on an “America First” platform, which critics worry could destabilize US alliances abroad. However, he maintains no formal diplomatic relations with Syria’s government, instead backing the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led coalition based in the northeast.

The conflict in Syria began in 2011 and has since become increasingly complex, with multiple groups vying for control. Trump’s stance on the issue seems to focus more on US relations with Russia, where it backs al-Assad’s government, rather than addressing the ongoing civil war directly.

Despite this, some experts warn that the US may face pressure from Turkey to stay involved in the conflict due to its own concerns about the Kurdish fighters. With Trump set to take office on January 20, his stance on Syria’s civil war is likely to have significant implications for the region.
