Tech billionaires Elon Musk and Sam Altman are venting about the state of US politics on Independence Day. In social-media posts, they expressed dissatisfaction with the current political landscape.
Musk rekindled his idea of starting a new party called the “America Party” after a falling out with former ally Donald Trump. He questioned whether Americans want to break free from the two-party system in a tweet. Musk’s comments may have been sparked by Trump’s recent proposal, which he deemed too bloated.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also expressed his dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party, citing its disconnect from his values of innovation and entrepreneurship. Altman, who was once a major donor to Democrats, now considers himself “politically homeless.” He believes in a system where wealth flows from technology, education, and innovation.
Altman’s shift may be seen as a response to growing anti-billionaire sentiment among some Democrats. He wrote that he’d rather hear candidates focus on creating opportunities for everyone, not eliminating billionaires.
Musk’s and Altman’s differing views may lead them to put aside their disagreements if they can find common ground on this Fourth of July. However, the two tech moguls’ frustrations with US politics suggest a deeper divide between them and the political establishment.
