Microsoft’s latest layoffs have hit its gaming studios hard. To help manage the emotional impact of job loss, an Xbox executive has suggested using AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot to provide support.
In a now-deleted LinkedIn post, Matt Turnbull, an Xbox Game Studios employee, recommended using AI tools for career planning, resume assistance, networking, and emotional clarity. The post included prompts and use cases for each area, such as building a 30-day plan to regroup and research new roles, drafting tailored resumes, and rewriting LinkedIn “About Me” sections.
Turnbull acknowledged that some people may have strong feelings about AI tools, but emphasized their potential to provide support during challenging times. He noted that while no AI tool can replace human experience, they can help individuals get unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity when mental energy is scarce.
The executive’s suggestions were met with mixed reactions on the internet, with some creatives viewing generative AI as a threat to creative industries like gaming. However, Turnbull’s recommendations are part of Microsoft’s broader investment in AI infrastructure, which may have made his approach seem reasonable within that context.
