A flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Dallas was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger mistakenly interpreted a text message as a threat. The plane took off on schedule but was diverted back to San Juan 32 minutes later after the passenger spotted another traveler receiving a test message that said “RIP”. The passenger who saw the message believed it was a warning of a potential security risk, prompting airport security and law enforcement to inspect the aircraft. However, it was later revealed that the message was sent by a passenger whose relative had passed away the day before and they were on their way to Dallas to help with funeral preparations. The plane eventually departed again after being cleared, but not before a three-and-a-half hour delay for passengers. American Airlines confirmed the incident and apologized for the inconvenience, stating that safety and security are their top priorities.
