US Signs Bill Funding NASA’s Artemis Program with $9.995 Billion

The US has signed into law a massive tax and spending package, H.R. 1, which includes $9.995 billion in funding for NASA’s Artemis program. The bill was passed by the Senate on Wednesday and approved by the House on Thursday before being signed by President Trump.

The funding will be used to support projects backed by politicians in states that have held key roles in NASA’s Artemis program. This includes $4.1 billion for the Space Launch System (SLS) heavy lift rocket, $20 million for the Orion spacecraft, and $2.6 billion for the Gateway, a lunar space station being built through international cooperation.

The funding also supports the development of a high-performance Mars telecommunications orbiter, which must be delivered by the end of 2028 to commercial companies that received funding from NASA in previous years.

NASA’s International Space Station will receive $1.25 billion in funding, with increments of at least $250 million allocated from FY25-29. The White House had proposed reducing these funds, but the bill preserves them.

Additionally, the bill includes $325 million for a contract with SpaceX to develop and deliver the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle, designed to slowly lower the orbit of the space station before bringing it down over the Pacific Ocean after its operational life in 2030. The funding also supports improvements to NASA’s manned spaceflight centers.

The legislation is part of the reconciliation process, which allows for a simple majority in both chambers of Congress, avoiding impacts from the filibuster.
