Apple’s Extreme Durability Testing: Replicating Real-World Conditions

Apple puts its products through rigorous testing to ensure they last long and withstand challenging conditions. To replicate the climate challenges faced by devices worldwide, the company subjects them to various environmental tests. These tests fall into four categories: Environmental, Water, Impact, and Vibration.

Environmental Tests
Apple simulates real-world climates, including exposure to salt, high light intensity, and dust from the Arizona desert. The tests also involve producing artificial versions of sweat and earwax for AirPods. By analyzing device usage data, Apple’s labs tailor their tests to reflect changing environments.

Water Protection
Apple uses IP ratings set by the electronics industry to measure water resistance. The iPhone 16 Pro has an IP68 rating, meaning it must pass a series of tests, including a drip ceiling test and simulated water pressure through jets around the product. The tests increase in intensity, culminating in a pressurized tank simulating submersion up to six meters.

Drop Tests
Apple uses a robot that drops devices at various angles and surfaces to simulate real-life drop scenarios. Each drop is analyzed using an app accessed by Apple engineers. This approach helps replicate the enormous variety of drop hazards, making it harder for devices to withstand real-world conditions.

Vibration Tests
The company subjects products to vibration tables with different frequencies to test their ability to survive rough transit or other real-world conditions. The tests expose products to various shaking environments and impacts, including motorcycles traveling over rough ground.

Apple’s efforts demonstrate the complexity of its durability testing process. By replicating real-world conditions, the company ensures its devices can withstand a wide range of challenges, from extreme temperatures to water and vibrations.
