PGPD Arrests Suspects in $700,000 FTC Impersonation Scam

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit recently arrested two suspects in connection with a carrier scam that impersonated Federal Trade Commission (FTC) agents. Zheng Xie and Jianwei Wang, both from different states, were accused of convincing victims to transfer large amounts of money.

Two main victims reported receiving calls from unknown numbers claiming their Apple ID was compromised. The caller instructed them to withdraw cash to secure their accounts, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of dollars for each victim.

The PGPD is working closely with other agencies and has identified two additional victims linked to these suspects. A grand jury indicted both men last week, charging them with conspiracy to commit theft scheme and related charges.

Residents are warned not to give money or valuables to unknown individuals, even if they claim to be from reputable businesses or government agencies. The PGPD offers guidance on how to report suspected scams and contact the authorities at 301-516-1464 or through various anonymous tip lines.
