Carnival Cruise Line Faces Backlash Over New Rules

Carnival Cruise Line has introduced new rules, sparking debate among passengers about whether they are racist or restrictive. The changes include stricter enforcement on drugs, curfews, restrictions on hand-held fans, limited drink packages, and a ban on playing personal music loudly.

The new policies were implemented after Carnival received allegations of serious crimes committed at sea, with the FBI listing it as having the most such incidents. The cruise line has a zero-tolerance policy for marijuana use, which remains illegal under federal law, despite being legal in some states.

Guests 17 and under must be out of public areas by 1 am unless accompanied by an adult, while fans have been banned due to safety concerns from “clacking” fans during the popular “Boots on the Ground” dance. Some online chatter suggests that Carnival might be moving towards a more curated playlist for DJs, potentially excluding hip-hop and rap music.

The new rules have led to concerns about selective enforcement, with some Black passengers feeling targeted by stricter drink package limits and music restrictions. While others welcome the changes, citing a need for better behavior on board, many are canceling their reservations or expressing frustration on social media.

“I’m not going back,” said one TikToker who canceled her reservation after seeing the new rules. “Carnival decided they wanted to rebrand and make us feel like we’re not welcome anymore.” Another added that Carnival has become “the Walmart of cruise lines” – a brand that needs to adapt to changing expectations.

The company claims its new policies aim to protect guests and staff, but critics argue it’s a crackdown on certain behaviors rather than targeting specific groups.
