France Accuses China and Pakistan of Anti-Rafale Disinformation Campaign

France’s defence ministry says it is fighting a ‘disinformation’ campaign against its Rafale jets, alleging that China used its embassies to undermine the sales and harm the reputation of the French fighter. Defence attaches in Chinese foreign embassies led the campaign to persuade countries not to buy more Rafales and instead choose Chinese-made jets.

China’s claims that France’s allegations are “pure groundless rumours and slander” have been rejected by the French, who say the issue is not just about a single aircraft but also about France’s national image and strategic autonomy. India has denied reports of its planes being downed by Rafales during Operation Sindoor in May.

The campaign allegedly included manipulated visuals, AI-generated content, and over 1,000 new social media accounts to spread a narrative of Chinese technology superiority. However, French officials have not been able to directly link the online bashing to the Chinese government.

France’s defense industry earns big business from selling Rafale jets, helping its efforts to strengthen ties with countries in Asia where China is trying to establish itself as the dominant power. Dassault Aviation, the maker of Rafales, has sold 533 jets worldwide, including 323 for export to several countries.
