Prince George’s County law enforcement officials are sounding the alarm about a complex scam targeting mostly seniors, warning residents to be vigilant against sophisticated scammers using AI technology.
Two suspects, Zheng Xie from New York and Jianwei Wang from California, have been arrested in connection with a carrier scam involving victims losing over $1 million. The scammers posed as Federal Trade Commission (FTC) agents, convincing victims that their accounts were compromised and instructing them to withdraw cash to secure their money.
Experts warn that the scammers, believed to be operating from foreign countries like China, have become increasingly sophisticated using AI technology. They create fear by claiming they are with the government or a bank, gaining trust before striking. Residents are advised to be cautious and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
