Grigor Dimitrov Retires from Wimbledon with Injury

Grigor Dimitrov’s heartbreaking injury struggles continued at Wimbledon, where he was forced to retire due to a right pectoral muscle injury while leading top seed Jannik Sinner 6-3, 7-5, 2-2. The Bulgarian player has now retired in each of his past five Grand Slam appearances.

Dimitrov’s injury woes began 12 months ago at Wimbledon, where he slipped and damaged his knee. He then retired in the US Open quarter-finals and suffered a groin injury at the Australian Open. Last month, he was forced to retire from Roland Garros due to a leg injury.

Sinner, who is into the quarter-finals for the fourth consecutive year, praised Dimitrov’s skills, saying “He is an incredible player… Seeing him in this position, honestly, if there would be a chance that he could play the next round, he would deserve it.” Sinner will face World No. 10 Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals.

The Italian player expressed sympathy for Dimitrov, citing his struggles with injuries and hard work. Dimitrov’s series of setbacks may have tempered expectations, but he caused havoc on the grass courts at Wimbledon, reaching the cusp of a victory over a top seed.
