Rome — A man died after being sucked into the engine of an Airbus A319 plane taking off from Milan Bergamo Airport on Tuesday. The incident occurred shortly after the aircraft completed boarding and began taxiing away from the terminal.
According to the airport’s official social media channels, the closure was due to a “problem that occurred on the taxiway.” Police and firefighters responded to the scene, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
The victim, who was neither a passenger nor an airport employee, allegedly entered the runway with the intent to take his own life. He eluded security staff and ran toward the aircraft when it was already in motion.
Eight departing flights were canceled during the suspension, while arriving flights were diverted to other airports in the region.
The incident highlights the importance of airport security measures and the need for passengers to be aware of their surroundings. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, but are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
