Ukraine Requests Probe Into Alleged Russian Chemical Weapons Use

Ukraine has urged the global chemical weapons watchdog to investigate allegations of Russia’s use of banned toxic munitions against its forces. The request was submitted to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.

According to Dutch and German intelligence agencies, there is evidence of widespread use of illegal weapons by Russia along the conflict line. The OPCW has agreed to step up monitoring of the area due to the alleged frequent use of chemical agents.

The US had previously accused Russia of using chloropicrin, a highly toxic chemical compound, in Ukraine. However, both sides have denied using chemical weapons in the conflict. Ukraine is now requesting an independent investigation into cases of alleged chemical weapon use.

At least three Ukrainian deaths and over 2,500 injured individuals have reported symptoms related to chemical weapons use. The OPCW has agreed to establish a mechanism to collect additional evidence and identify perpetrators.

This request comes after Britain imposed sanctions on two Russian individuals and one entity in its latest effort to punish Russia for the war in Ukraine.
