Two tech companies, Palantir and Anduril, have formed a partnership to advance the US government’s artificial intelligence capabilities. The consortium aims to develop technological infrastructure that enables the US to lead the world in AI and transform its national security capabilities.
Palantir, an analytics outfit, and Anduril, an autonomous systems vendor, are named after objects from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” A Palantir is a magical crystal orb that allows real-time communication between devices, while Anduril refers to the sword Narsil, broken in battle before being re-forged.
The companies will address two key issues: retaining sensor data collected by vehicles and weapons for AI training and development, and creating a secure enterprise pipeline to utilize this data. By combining their products, Palantir and Anduril plan to overcome these challenges.
In contrast, Sauron, a startup named after the embodiment of evil in Tolkien’s mythology, has secured $18 million in funding for a home security system aimed at the wealthy. The system uses drones equipped with facial recognition technology to detect suspicious individuals.
This partnership between Palantir and Anduril highlights the intersection of AI, national security, and technology.
