The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has ended its emergency response to the H5N1 bird flu, citing declining animal infections and no reported human cases since February. The agency will continue to monitor the situation and report monthly data on people monitored and tested for bird flu.
The decision follows a 70-case outbreak in the US, with all cases reported in animals, eliminating the need for a person-to-person exposure risk. Only one fatality from H5N1 has been reported in the US since April last year.
The CDC will no longer report detections in animals on its website, but data can be found on the USDA’s site. The agency remains vigilant, monitoring the situation and scaling up activities as needed to address any potential public health risks.
