Giants’ Patrick Bailey Achieves Rare Baseball History with Walk-Off Homer

San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey etched himself into Major League Baseball history with a walk-off inside-the-park home run against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. The historic moment occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning, when two runners were on base and down 3-1.

Bailey sent the first pitch deep into right-center field, where it bounced past two Phillies outfielders and headed towards left field before he turned and sprinted home to score the winning run, giving the Giants a 4-3 victory. This achievement marked Bailey’s first inside-the-park walk-off home run since 1926, surpassing records previously held by Bennie Tate for the Washington Nationals in 1907.

When asked about his historic hit, Bailey jokingly wished he had hit it over the fence and said he “knew I got it well” after seeing it bounce towards Triples Alley. Giants manager Bob Melvin praised Bailey’s ability to come through with big hits in crucial situations, saying he was “driving a ball like that in a while.”

The rare achievement also marked the first time in MLB history that two leadoff and walk-off inside-the-park home runs occurred on the same day, as A’s outfielder Lawrence Butler also hit an inside-the-park home run earlier in the game against the Atlanta Braves.
