Vatican Introduces New Mass for Environmental Protection

The Vatican has released a new rite for Mass that focuses on environmental protection, particularly climate action. The “Mass for the Care of Creation” is inspired by Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical “Laudato Si'” and aims to provide liturgical support for caring for nature.

Cardinal Michael Czerny presented the new Mass at a Vatican news conference, stating that it offers spiritual and communal support for exercising care over the natural world. The Mass features readings and prayers on creation themes and is designed for weekdays or as indicated by national bishops’ conferences.

Pope Leo XIV has expressed his commitment to environmental protection through a message on September 1, warning of the devastating impact of human activity on the planet. He emphasized that environmental justice is no longer an abstract concept but an urgent need involving social, economic, and human aspects.

The idea for the new Mass began under Pope Francis’ papacy, which made care for the environment a core focus. The Mass is not a new theme in liturgy but rather builds upon existing elements to provide a dedicated way of celebrating creation’s importance.
