US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have expressed optimism about a ceasefire deal with Hamas, saying it is “very close” to being secured.
According to Trump, the goal of reaching a peace agreement includes securing the release of hostages and ending the conflict. The US has been under pressure to secure a deal that would bring an end to the violence in Gaza.
Netanyahu echoed Trump’s sentiments, stating that there is a “good chance” of reaching a 60-day ceasefire agreement with Hamas. He emphasized that half of the live and deceased hostages would be returned to Israel during this period.
The negotiations have been complicated by disagreements over Israel’s military presence in Gaza and aid distribution. Netanyahu expressed frustration with the international community, particularly the UN, over their handling of humanitarian aid through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
Despite these challenges, both leaders remain committed to finding a solution. Trump is expected to continue pressure on Netanyahu to secure a deal that meets all parties’ requirements.
A US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, will also be involved in the negotiations in Doha this week. The goal of the talks is to reach a comprehensive agreement that addresses Hamas’ concerns and ensures the continued flow of aid to Gaza.
