Gaza Conflict Claims Over 798 Lives at US-Backed Aid Distribution Points

A UN human rights office report has confirmed that at least 798 people have been killed while seeking food at distribution points operated by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) since May. The GHF, which was proposed by Israel as an alternative to the UN aid system in Gaza, has faced widespread criticism for its treatment of Palestinians.

According to the report, 615 killings occurred near the GHF’s distribution points, while 183 were reportedly on the route of aid convoys. The GHF has denied these claims, saying they are “false and misleading”.

Critics argue that the GHF’s system is designed to restrict access to aid for Palestinians, forcing them to navigate complex routes and endure long distances to reach food sites. Medical charities have reported a sharp rise in acute malnutrition among Gaza residents.

Meanwhile, Israel has intensified its airstrikes on Gaza over the last week, as negotiators report a ceasefire deal is in sight but not yet achieved. The US president expressed optimism about the possibility of a deal this week or next, but negotiations remain stalled due to disagreements over key issues such as Hamas’s demands for assurances against future fighting.

Humanitarian experts warn that any plan to relocate Gaza’s population to a “humanitarian city” could worsen the crisis and forcibly displace people. With more than 57,000 people killed during Israel’s military operations in Gaza since October 2023, residents say they are losing hope for a lasting peace.
