Venus Williams is making a comeback to professional tennis after a 16-month absence, joining the main-draw field at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington D.C. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and 16-time Grand Slam doubles champion will compete on July 21.
Williams, who has spent time in the city playing for the Washington Kastles in World Team Tennis, said she’s excited to be back at the event. “I’m thrilled to accept a wild card to the Mubadala Citi DC Open,” she stated. “This city has always shown me so much love, and I can’t wait to compete there again!”
Other top players joining Williams include World No. 6 Zheng Qinwen of China, and Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova, who is aiming for her first Top 10 victory. The event boasts four Top 10 players and five Grand Slam singles champions in its women’s field.
