Trump’s Trade Wars Hit Consumers Harder at Macy’s and Other Retailers

US President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade wars are causing retailers to pass on rising costs to customers, particularly in department stores. Shoppers at Queens’ largest mall said they’re feeling the pinch of higher prices.

Retailers like Macy’s have seen significant price increases for imported goods since January. A recent study by DataWeave found that footwear and apparel prices rose 4% and nearly 2%, respectively, over six months. Footwear from Vietnam, a key manufacturer, will face tariffs of up to 40% if new proposed levies take effect.

Macy’s CEO Tony Spring has warned that some prices will remain unchanged while others may increase due to the tariffs. Other retailers are also grappling with the increased costs. However, some customers haven’t noticed any price hikes, especially when using coupons.

The retail industry faces a tough environment, with department stores losing customers to online shopping. The White House is still negotiating tariffs that could hit up to 40% on imported goods. With negotiations ongoing, it’s unclear how much more prices will rise.
