Gaza’s largest hospital, Nasser Medical Complex, is on the brink of disaster due to a severe fuel shortage and an ongoing Israeli ground offensive. The hospital, which has a 350-bed capacity, has been forced to stop admitting patients as Israeli troops and tanks advanced into a nearby cemetery, threatening its life-saving services.
Medical staff are exhausted and fear for their lives as they work with minimal resources. A doctor at the hospital warned that the situation is “closer to death than to life” due to the lack of fuel and medical equipment. The hospital’s electricity generators are expected to shut down soon, putting dozens of patients in immediate danger.
The Israeli military has issued evacuation orders for the areas around the hospital, but medical staff say they received no advance warning of the operation. Civilians near the hospital’s gates were injured by stray bullets, adding to the chaos.
As the situation escalates, the international community is calling for restraint. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was outraged by the shooting of its staff member and a volunteer in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed a new ceasefire deal that could see Hamas release half of its hostages, but indirect negotiations are stalled due to sticking points.
The conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 57,000 deaths since October 2023, with thousands more injured. The situation remains dire, and the international community is urging calm and restraint to prevent further escalation.
