Mexican Auto Maker Giant Motors Sees No Impact of U.S. Tariffs

Giant Motors LatinoamĂ©rica, the only Chinese vehicle manufacturer in Mexico, remains unfazed by the threat of US tariffs on Mexican exports and imports. The company’s CEO, ElĂas Massri, told Bloomberg that his firm is ready to adapt to any changes in trade policies.

Massri said Giant Motors has already weathered two major challenges: the first Trump administration’s tariffs in 2018 and the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have not stopped investing what is required and earning profits,” he stated.

The company’s focus is solely on the Mexican market, with no plans to export vehicles to the US. Instead, Giant Motors will source auto parts from countries with favorable trade agreements with Mexico.

However, Mexico has been increasing tariffs on Chinese imports in an effort to reduce its reliance on these goods. The move may impact companies like BYD, which is planning to build a plant in Mexico but has yet to secure firm investment.

“We are not satisfied with our size,” Massri said, indicating the company’s ambition to expand. With production expected to reach 40,000 units by 2025, Giant Motors remains optimistic about its growth prospects despite potential US tariffs on Mexican exports and imports.
