Artificial intelligence (AI) may be viewed as a harbinger of doom for jobs, but experts say the technology could create new job opportunities. While some positions will likely be disrupted, analysts argue that AI will also bring about fresh roles that require complex or creative thinking.
Companies are already looking to employees to manage and quality-check AI tools. New roles are emerging that demand human expertise in areas such as foreign languages, data analysis, and specialized skills. However, questions remain about the types of jobs that will be created by AI-driven changes in the US workplace.
According to a survey by the World Economic Forum, AI is expected to create 170 million jobs globally over the next five years, surpassing 92 million jobs lost. Historically, technological breakthroughs have led to more job creation than destruction, but experts say AI presents a unique challenge.
“It’s not like we’re completely without control,” said Harry Holzer, professor of public policy at Georgetown University. “There are places where we do have control.”
Analysts predict that AI will lead to the emergence of new categories of jobs, such as those requiring humans to evaluate the quality and authenticity of AI output. Others believe that AI tools could create a boom in specialty positions, like primary care doctors focusing on diagnosis.
However, caution is advised as workers weigh how best to adapt to the changes promised by AI. “The worst thing you could do right now is make a complex career decision based on what AI is doing today,” said Ethan Mollick, business professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
