At least 15 people, including women and children, were killed in an Israeli strike on a health center in Deir Al Balah, central Gaza, on Thursday, according to medical staff and officials.
The Aqsa Martyrs Hospital reported that eight of those killed were children, with the youngest under two years old and the oldest 14. Three women and four men were also killed. The hospital said the strike targeted a Hamas militant who participated in attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.
In a statement, the Israeli military said it was aware of reports regarding injured individuals but claimed to be reviewing the incident. They expressed regret for any harm caused to uninvolved individuals and stated that they operate to minimize harm.
The strike occurred near a medical center dispensing children’s formula to women, according to Project HOPE, an American aid organization. The organization’s CEO said the location had been shared with the Israeli military but was still attacked, causing “innocent families” to be mercilessly attacked as they waited for treatment.
Gaza’s health ministry reported that nearly 3,000 Palestinians were killed over the past month in Gaza, and Hamas has continued conducting guerrilla-style attacks against the Israeli military. The Israeli military also reported a 20-year-old man was killed in an attack at the Gush Etzion junction south of Jerusalem on Thursday.
The targeting of civilians and medical facilities is increasingly becoming a concern in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
