Oakley Creates Visor for NASA’s Artemis III Mission

Oakley has been chosen to design a special visor for astronauts on the upcoming Artemis III mission to the moon. The visor, co-designed with Axiom Space, will provide protection from harsh conditions such as UV radiation and lunar dust.

According to Koichi Wakata, an astronaut on board Axiom Space’s spacecraft, the sun can feel piercing through the eyes in space. “We need an exceptional visor system to protect our eyes and offer maximum visibility,” he says.

The new AxEMU visor features advanced technology including adjustable protection from radiation, a gold-coated lens that reflects extreme light and enhances visibility, and a scratch-resistant coating that protects against lunar dust.

Ryan Saylor, Oakley’s senior vice president of advanced product development, states that “developing the AxEMU visor system alongside Axiom Space marks a historic milestone… We’re proud to bring this legacy of optical performance and visual acuity to the Artemis III mission.”

The astronauts selected for the upcoming mission have yet to be announced. However, NASA has stated that they plan to land the first woman and person of color on the moon’s surface with Artemis.
