Four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in their off-campus home in 2022. Friends of the victims explained why they didn’t immediately call 911 after receiving a mysterious request for help from Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, who lived at the residence.
The “One Night in Idaho” Prime Video docuseries features interviews with family members and friends of the four victims: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Hunter Johnson, Emily Alandt, and Josie Lauteren shared their accounts of what happened on November 13, 2022.
Mortensen and Funke called the trio hours after the murders, claiming something weird had happened in the house. However, they didn’t seek immediate help, leading to a delayed 911 call that occurred at 11:58 a.m. the next day.
Friends stated they were in shock and didn’t want to alarm the others, fearing it might be a false alarm or just a bad dream. “I thought it was a dream,” Alandt said. “And I tried to call everybody to wake them up and no one’s answering.”
It wasn’t until later that Mortensen realized what had happened. The trio eventually called 911 after finding the house in disarray and witnessing disturbing signs of violence.
Dylan Mortensen has since been arrested, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of murder, and is scheduled for sentencing on July 23. His co-conspirator, Bethany Funke, remains uncooperative with authorities.
