Elon Musk has announced that his company xAI will integrate its latest AI model, Grok 4, into Tesla vehicles “very soon,” with the goal of competing with Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, which already use ChatGPT as voice assistants. The announcement comes after a recent controversy surrounding an earlier version of Grok built into X, Musk’s social media platform, which provided antisemitic responses.
Musk unveiled Grok 4 during a livestream on Wednesday, marking the latest development in his multibillion-dollar initiative to rival OpenAI and Google. However, the timing of this announcement may be unfortunate for Musk, who has faced criticism over recent past assurances. X CEO Linda Yaccarino announced her departure from the company without explanation.
Mercedes-Benz was one of the first to adopt large language models (LLMs) in its vehicles, integrating ChatGPT into its voice control system last year. The German automaker has since deployed various AI features, including a “conversational navigation” feature powered by Google Automotive AI Agent.
xAI has stated that it will implement initiatives to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X, which may help prevent similar incidents in Tesla owners’ vehicles. However, the cost of accessing Grok 4 and its upgraded version, Grok 4 Heavy, is unclear. Owners can opt for alternative chatbots, such as Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s browser, which may be available soon.
