Turmeric Supplements Can Cause Liver Damage if Not Used Properly

A US woman, 57 years old, was hospitalized with liver damage after taking daily turmeric supplements. She had started taking the pills in March to alleviate inflammation and joint pain but soon experienced stomach pain, nausea, and fatigue.

According to her doctor, she was at risk of full liver failure requiring a transplant if not treated promptly. The Institute of Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery warns that high concentrations of turmeric can harm the liver due to individual differences in digestive power.

Turmeric is safe when consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. A typical serving of ground turmeric (about half to one teaspoon) daily is sufficient for its health benefits without compromising liver health.

In contrast, supplements should only be taken if prescribed by a doctor, as their concentrations can vary and may cause damage. People with fatty liver disease or underlying liver conditions should avoid supplements altogether.

Symptoms of liver toxicity from excessive turmeric consumption include yellowing urine, lethargy, abdominal heaviness, weakness, and gastrointestinal problems. If these symptoms occur, it’s essential to consult a doctor and undergo liver function tests.
