The US attorney general has ordered charges to be dropped against a doctor accused of destroying Covid-19 vaccines worth $28,000. Dr Michael Kirk Moore Jr, a plastic surgeon, was indicted in 2023 under the Biden administration for conspiring to defraud the US and distributing fake vaccination record cards.
Moore pleaded not guilty to all charges in Utah, where he is already on trial. The acting US Attorney for the district of Utah has filed to dismiss the charges, citing “in the interests of justice”. Moore was accused of providing false vaccination certificates for over 1,900 vaccine doses in exchange for cash payments or donations.
The government also alleged that Moore gave children saline shots instead of the vaccine at their parents’ request. He faced up to 35 years in prison on multiple charges alongside his company and three others. The decision to drop the charges comes after US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and Senator Mike Lee, both Republicans, called for an end to what they saw as “government overreach” during COVID-19.
The case drew attention from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent figure in the anti-vaccination movement, who has questioned the safety and efficacy of vaccination. However, he recently stated that he is not “anti-vax”.
