Stephen King’s 2019 novel “The Institute” is now a miniseries on MGM+, with some major additions and minor changes. The story follows 14-year-old Luke Ellis, a genius with telekinetic powers, who is kidnapped by nefarious adults seeking to exploit his abilities. Luke is taken to the Institute, a drab complex where children with extraordinary powers are held captive.
Ms. Sigsby, played by Mary-Louise Parker, runs the institute and presents herself as a benevolent figure, but her true intentions are sinister. The other inmates include Kalisha, Iris, Nick, and Avery, each with their own unique abilities. As Luke navigates this new reality, he must also confront the dark secrets behind the Institute’s purpose.
Meanwhile, Tim Jamieson, a former policeman, discovers his hometown is near the Institute and decides to investigate. He meets Officer Wendy Gullickson and Annie, a street person who becomes a valuable ally in uncovering the truth.
The miniseries explores themes of child abuse, resistance, and revolt, serving as a metaphor for the exploitation of young people by those in power. With its complex plans and methods, King’s world is often unclear, but the show offers a compelling narrative that will keep viewers engaged until the end.
