Superman Soars to $217 Million at Box Office

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is celebrating the successful opening weekend of “Superman,” which grossed $122 million domestically and $217 million globally. The comic book adaptation, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, marks a new direction for DC Studios under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Zaslav hired Gunn and Safran in 2022 to revamp the studio’s creative direction after four major flops. Their 10-year plan includes interconnected stories and spinoffs, such as “Supergirl” and “Clayface,” as well as a new take on “Wonder Woman.” Zaslav praised Gunn’s vision, saying it brought “new life and excitement to one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world.”

The success of “Superman” is seen as a crucial step towards matching Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe’s commercial success. However, the film’s budget of $225 million requires sustained box office performance to qualify as a true blockbuster. Despite potential challenges, Zaslav remains optimistic, citing a strong audience response and positive reviews.

The CEO expressed his excitement for DC Studios’ future plans, including upcoming films and series like “Supergirl,” “Clayface,” and “Lanterns” on HBO Max. With its bold 10-year plan in place, the studio is poised to build momentum and create a lasting cinematic universe.
