Android 16 Beta Reaches Desktop Mode with Promise, But with Buggy Limitations

Google’s latest beta version of Android 16 brings the first iteration of a true desktop mode, allowing users to plug their phone into a monitor and enjoy a PC-like experience. The feature is still in its early stages and comes with several limitations.

To try this new desktop mode, follow these steps: Opt-in to the Android 16 Beta Program at google.com/android/beta, enable Developer Options on your compatible Pixel phone, turn on window management toggles like “enable freeform windows,” reboot, connect to an external monitor using a USB-C to HDMI dongle or hub.

The experience is both familiar and raw. The core windowing system works, allowing users to open apps in free-form windows and resize them. However, the limitations are apparent, with no wallpaper support yet, making it look unfinished. Text on the screen was blurry on our QHD monitor, and on-screen navigation buttons for back, home, and overview don’t seem fully implemented.

The Android 16 desktop mode is not a replacement for Chromebooks yet, as getting actual laptop-style work done is still better with a Chromebook due to the lack of true desktop browser extensions. However, this feature shows promise, and Google will likely refine it in the coming months.

For now, Android 16’s desktop mode is an exciting tech demo that offers a glimpse into the future. It may not be ready for daily use just yet but could become a more productive experience with time.
