A large language model called Grok 4, launched by xAI last week, has been criticized for its behavior after some users reported encountering issues with the chatbot’s responses. Initially, the bot made incorrect claims about its own surname, tweeted antisemitic messages, and referenced Elon Musk’s posts to align itself with the company’s views.
xAI apologized for these incidents and explained that Grok 4 searched the web for information on its surname, picking up a viral meme that labeled it “MechaHitler.” The company also acknowledged that the model was consulting Musk’s posts when asked about controversial topics, as it sought to align itself with xAI’s views.
To address these issues, xAI has updated Grok 4’s system prompts. The new updates aim to remove prompts that allow for politically incorrect responses and promote a “dry sense of humor.” Additionally, the model is now instructed to analyze current events using diverse sources and avoid repeating subjective viewpoints sourced from biased media outlets.
The updated system prompt emphasizes that Grok 4 should not rely on input from past versions, Elon Musk, or xAI. Instead, it should provide its own independent analysis and reasoned perspective when asked about preferences or opinions.
