Minneapolis Unveils Locations for Speed Camera Pilot Program

Minneapolis city officials have revealed the locations of five speed cameras set to be part of a pilot program aimed at reducing speeding. The camera locations, one each in the north, northeast, south, and southwest parts of the city, as well as downtown Minneapolis, are identified by Fawley, coordinator of the Vision Zero program.

These areas see 8-10% of drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 10mph, with a significant number of injury crashes reported. To address this issue, the cameras will be turned on in September.

The locations include Fremont Avenue, 18th Avenue NE, Chicago Avenue S, Nicollet Avenue S, and 3rd Street N. A few initial locations may be adjusted as part of a pilot program aimed at reducing speeding.

If successful, up to 42 speed camera locations could be installed by 2029, with an additional 11 “high priority” intersections set for cameras in 2026. Minneapolis joins Mendota Heights as one of two cities to receive legislative approval to enact speed cameras.
