A new large study from Denmark has found no evidence that exposure to aluminum salts in childhood vaccines increases the risk of developing conditions such as asthma and autism. The study, which examined over 1.2 million children over a 24-year period, found no statistically significant increase in any of the conditions studied.
Senior author Anders Hviid described the findings as “quite striking” and stated that parents should not be concerned about aluminum used as an adjuvant in childhood vaccines. The study’s authors noted that while there may be a small increased risk for some very rare conditions, this does not indicate an epidemic of chronic diseases in childhood.
Experts in the field welcomed the publication, citing it as the largest and most definitive observational study on the safety of vaccine-related aluminum exposure in children. Dr. Anna Durbin, director of the Center for Immunization Research at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, stated that the study should give parents confidence that vaccinating their children according to the recommended schedule does not increase their risk of developing asthma.
The study’s findings support the long-held notion that aluminum salts have been used safely and effectively in vaccines for over 70 years. Researchers used Denmark’s nationwide health care registries to compile a cohort of 1.2 million children, examining diagnoses for 50 conditions up to 5 years of age.
While some may argue that receiving more vaccines could exacerbate the effect of aluminum exposure, the study found no dose-response relationship between the number of vaccines and the risk of developing any condition. The authors acknowledged some limitations, including a difference in vaccine schedules between Denmark and the United States, but emphasized the importance of these vaccines in global immunization programs.
The study’s clear-cut results underscore the safety of childhood vaccines containing aluminum salts, particularly when considering the potential risks of withholding vaccines from children. Hviid stated that “if you take them away, children are going to die.”
