Diet Beats Exercise as Obesity’s Main Culprit

A new analysis by scientists at Duke University suggests that diet plays a significantly greater role in obesity than exercise. Contrary to long-held assumptions, the study indicates that high calorie intake is the main cause of weight gain, not lack of physical activity.

Researchers analyzed data from 4,213 people across 34 countries and six continents, revealing a strong correlation between living in industrialized nations and higher body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage. Despite increased energy consumption in these groups, they could not be explained by low exercise levels.

The study focuses on highly processed foods, which are prevalent in industrialized countries, including sausages, sweets, and ready meals. The findings suggest that a higher percentage of body fat was found where such foods were widely available and affordable.

According to the German Obesity Society, two-thirds of men and half of women in Germany are overweight, with the global obesity crisis worsening over the past few decades, affecting children and young people as well.
