Israeli air strikes in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley have killed at least 12 people, including seven Syrians and three Lebanese. The strikes targeted military compounds belonging to the Hezbollah group, including training camps affiliated with its elite Radwan Force.
The attacks came days after a ceasefire ended a year of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The Israeli military says it struck several targets, including those used by Hezbollah for storing combat equipment.
Hezbollah has not commented on the strikes, but described them as a violation of the ceasefire and Lebanon’s sovereignty. The group had been required to withdraw its forces from certain areas under a UN resolution, but maintains a military presence at some sites in southern Lebanon.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the strikes sent “a clear message” to Hezbollah, emphasizing that Israel would respond with maximum force if the group tried to rebuild its military capabilities. The ceasefire agreement requires full implementation of a 2006 UN resolution, which aimed to disarm all armed groups in Lebanon and limit Hezbollah’s presence.
