Warner Bros.’ “Superman” reboot, directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, took the top spot at the UK and Ireland box office with £6.9 million ($9.4 million) in its debut week. The film’s opening was below expectations, as it only managed to reach $15 million from “Man of Steel,” which opened with a higher amount.
The heatwave conditions in the region contributed to the decline in blockbuster collections, with audiences opting for outdoor activities over cinema. This trend has resulted in a 35% drop week-on-week in blockbuster collections. The popularity of Wimbledon also played a role, as its conclusion on Sunday evening may have influenced audience choices.
Other films in the top five included Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” and Warner Bros.’ F1,” which maintained their positions with significant earnings. Disney’s “Elio” and Sony’s “28 Years Later” rounded out the top five with notable performances.
Looking ahead, Paramount’s animated film “Smurfs” is set to open wide across the UK and Ireland, directed by Chris Miller and featuring a star-studded voice cast. The horror franchise “I Know What You Did Last Summer” also returns, marking its 25th anniversary.
Upcoming releases include Vertigo Releasing’s “Four Letters of Love,” starring Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter, as well as Mubi’s “Harvest.” Stanley Kubrick’s classic film “Barry Lyndon” is receiving a 50th-anniversary 4K reissue.
