Samsung’s latest foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7, mark a significant leap forward in design, but they’re not without controversy. In an interview with Korea’s ET News, Samsung’s MX Managing Director Kang Min-seok discussed the trade-offs made to achieve these new designs.
Kang emphasized that consumers want thin and light products, which led to the removal of features like the S Pen digitizer, under-display camera, and battery improvements. However, he stressed that this drive for ultra-thin design is not the only focus, and Samsung is “pursuing a perfect product balance.”
For the Fold 7, a redesigned frame with the “Armor Flex” hinge enabled its 8.9mm chassis. The foldable display also saw significant improvements, while the camera system was reduced in size by 18% compared to previous models.
The Flip 7 boasts new high-density circuit boards, allowing for a larger battery capacity despite its slimmer design. However, both phones have their share of controversies, and Samsung acknowledges that they’re still taking smartphones one generation at a time.
Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 are now available, with customers able to save up to $1,000 in trade-in value and score storage upgrades and additional credit. The devices will start shipping on July 25th alongside other new products.
